B4C Community Health Update (updated 3/19/20)
Breathe For Change Wellness Champions and community,
What an unexpected week. And, what a week to have a wellness practice. We are always grateful for the work that we do, but these few weeks have put the embodiment of our message to the test. We hope you are able to draw on practices to maintain your well-being too.
For the coming weeks, our response is actively guided by our team’s core values. Read on to hear how we are adapting alongside all of you.
Accountability. In January, spring trainees made a commitment to us, we made a commitment to trainers, and our trainers made a commitment to trainees. We moved online to uphold these commitments (permitted by Yoga Alliance), kept our trainers and Graduate Fellows on payroll, and are working to deliver a high-quality digital experience for our current trainees.
Integrity. While we act to ensure our community’s short-term health, we also open the door to long-term planning. Our updated policy for our summer trainings offers a full refund and fee-free cohort change. Trainees must request a refund or cohort change by:
- June 1, 2020: Austin, Bay Area, Denver and Madison
- July 1, 2020: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Seattle, Washington DC
At this time, summer training is scheduled and capped at 50 trainees; we will update you as public health guidelines extend into June and July. Take time to gather info and make a decision; we will, too.
Balance. Many of you are balancing your own wellness, care for your family, and community needs. Remember… this is not a 3-day blizzard, but a months-long health issue. We invite you to lean on our new resources and join our virtual wellness sessions to receive love & support while you give so much of it. We are doing the same...hang in there!
Growth. We grew our roots via in-person professional training for educators and community leaders. It’s time to grow some branches in the digital space, to broaden the accessibility of our offerings in good times and tough ones. Kindness. Whew! Please find time to show yourself loving-kindness today. We appreciate all that you are doing to maintain a sense of stability for youth in your community. THANK YOU!
Infectious disease expert Michael Osterholm -- who has served roles for the five previous U.S. presidential administrations -- reminds us that staying healthy ourselves is key. Your simple act of loving-kindness today could include:
- Stay at or work toward a healthy weight for your body.
- If you’re on medications - such as high blood pressure - do not skip them.
- Get sleep.
- Eat healthy food.
- Drink plenty of water. (And lower your alcohol intake.)
- Move! And go outside, at a distance from others, if permitted where you live.
B4C Community Health Update (updated 3/10/20)
All Spring 2020 Trainings:
In light of the ongoing developments with COVID-19, and to help reduce the potential spread of the virus, Breathe For Change is canceling the upcoming March 14-15 B4C weekend training in all regions (Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, and NYC). We will use this time to prepare a plan for the remaining spring training sessions, which may include digital learning and in-person sessions.
Given that the March 14-15 weekend will be canceled, we plan on holding training the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26, which is the previously communicated make up training weekend.
Breathe For Change will provide updates regarding the plan for future training weekends via e-mail and on the Training Status webpage as we have them. We, as a company, are committed to taking action to ensure the health and well-being of our trainees, trainers and surrounding communities is top priority!

Bay Area Spring 2020 Training:
In light of the ongoing developments with COVID-19 and following the guidance from the San Francisco Department of Health regarding limiting non-essential events, the upcoming March 14-15 Bay Area B4C weekend training will be canceled.
We will keep you updated regarding the status of future training weekends beyond March 14-15, but as of now, consider that they will still operate as scheduled. Given that the March 14-15 weekend will be canceled, we will hold training the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26, which is the previously communicated make up training weekend.

Boston, Chicago, NYC Spring 2020 Trainings:
Currently, the March 14-15 weekend trainings in Boston, Chicago, and NYC are still set to occur as planned. Breathe For Change is monitoring the ongoing developments with COVID-19 daily and following the guidance of the Departments of Health of Boston, Chicago, and New York City. Any updates to our training will be communicated via e-mail and on the Training Status webpage.
The health and safety of our community is our top priority so if you are not feeling well or are showing any symptoms of illness, please stay at home. Please take care of yourself and practice good hygiene. If you are not able to attend training due to COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms, B4C will work with you on make-up options.
B4C Community Health Update (updated 3/3/20)
Breathe For Change has no anticipated training closures at this time. We review CDC recommendations for organizations similar to Breathe For Change and monitor large school district responses to any local incidents, if applicable. Updated CDC guidance for K-12 schools can be found here.
How can I contribute to a healthy community at training?
The CDC shared effective strategies to prevent the spread of disease built on daily, common-sense practices:
- Follow usual good sneezing and cough etiquette.
- Wash your hands -- 20+ seconds with soap and water, or hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol.
- Stay home from training if you have flu-like symptoms, as always.
- Get a flu shot to prevent the common flu (and thus prevent any COVID-19 false alarms & ER visits).
- Email email@example.com if a health alert is communicated by your district.
How will the Breathe For Change team contribute to a healthy community at training?
We will continue to monitor CDC guidance on the location and prevention of the spread of disease, and keep a clean training environment through the following measures:
- Make hand sanitizer, soap, and tissues available at training.
- Wipe down commonly touched surfaces Saturday morning of training (doorknobs, etc).
- Ensure B4C team members do not report to work with flu-like symptoms.
We will also continue to respond to inquiries about our attendance policy, which remains the same, and monitor the attendance rate and reasons for missing training days, including illness.
We are in contact with each of our spring venues about their cleaning practices and can share any information that the venue’s district publishes about cleaning practices and potential responses to any escalations.
A Note on Spring Break
Many school community members have upcoming travel plans. The CDC recommends the following routine precautions to everyone traveling:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Wash your hands frequently.
- Review of country-by-country and cruise guidance for international travelers.
Potential Changes to Scheduled Trainings
We will notify trainees by 5pm the night before training via email, text message, and web page about all changes to a scheduled training, including cancellation. We are currently continuing with our trainings as scheduled.
Considering a summer training? If Breathe For Change cancels the 200-hour training, trainees will be invited to change to another cohort at no cost or receive a full refund. If an individual separately chooses to no longer attend a training, they will still be subject to our regular refund and cohort change policy available here.
